Major League Baseball: Betting Favorites to Win 2018 World Series

The Major League Baseball season is nearing the halfway point, and division races are starting to heat up all across baseball. The Cleveland Indians have the largest divisional lead at just 5 games in the AL Central. While tight races exist at the moment, the World Series Champion favorites are starting to make themselves more clear. Let’s take a look at the top 5 betting favorites to win the World Series at this point in the year.

New York Yankees +400:

The New York Yankees have the best record in baseball up to this point, so it’s no surprise that they have the best odds to win the World Series this fall. The Yankees lead the Boston Red Sox by 2 games in the AL East, and it appears that these two teams will battle all season long. The Yankees continue to hit home runs at an extremely high rate, and now have 7 players who have hit double digit home runs. Luis Severino leads a very good starting rotation, and Aroldis Chapman is back to dominating in the Yankees bullpen. Aaron Boone’s first year as Yankees manager is off to a great start, and he might just be able to lead them to a championship in his first year. The Yankees are the real deal.

Houston Astros +450:

The defending World Series Champion, Houston Astros, just recently saw a 12 game win streak come to an end. The win streak vaulted the Astros to the top of the American League West division, and they now have the second best odds to win the title. The Astros are trying to become the first team to repeat as World Series Champions since the Yankees in 2000. The Astros have by far the biggest run differential in MLB, outscoring opponents by 161 runs in 2018. Justin Verlander leads a dominant starting rotation, and Jose Altuve continues to hit for Houston. The Astros will play a large role in deciding who wins the World Series come playoff time in October.

Boston Red Sox +600:

Another American League team checks in with the third best odds to win a World series. The Boston Red Sox are in a very tight battle with the New York Yankees atop the AL East, but look to be a lock to reach the playoffs this season. The Red Sox are the second highest scoring team in baseball, behind the Houston Astros. Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez lead a balanced Red Sox attack, who routinely wear down opposing pitchers. David Price is have a terrific bounce back season for the Red Sox, and the Boston rotation has done a great job all season long. If the Red Sox reach the postseason this fall, they will be an extremely dangerous team with a great chance to win it all. It appears that the winner of the American League pennant will be heavy favorites to win the World Series before the series begins.

Washington Nationals +700:

It comes as a small surprise to see the Nationals getting such good odds to win the World Series. The Nationals are currently in third place in the National League East, and have been a minor disappointment so far in 2018. The Nationals are plenty capable of turning their season around, and if they are able to reach the playoffs, would be extremely dangerous. Washington has yet to win a postseason series in team history, but they have the potential to get the job done this year. Max Scherzer leads a terrific starting rotation, and Scherzer could be headed for his third straight Cy Young Award in the National League. Bryce Harper is potentially playing in his final year in Washington, and would love to deliver a World Series Championship before he leaves town. The Nationals still have plenty of work to do in order to reach the playoffs, but could be a very good pick to win it all if they get there.

Chicago Cubs +950:

The Chicago Cubs check in with the fifth best odds to win the World Series, and this seems like an absolute steal of a bet at this time. The Cubs are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the National League, although they still trail the Brewers in the National League Central. The Cubs have reached the National League Championship Series in three straight seasons, and appear to have the necessary talent to get there again. The Cubs still have a ton of offensive talent, and rank in the top 5 in most offensive categories. Chicago must find a way to shore up their starting rotation, and they must find a way to throw more strikes. If Theo Epstein is able to strike a deal to bring in another starter at the trade deadline, the Cubs might jump to the top of this list. The Cubs will factor into the mix in the National League, and with a little help could win a second championship in 3 years.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the games!
